MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Western Oregon University women's basketball team and #9/#10 Western Washington will end up playing each other, just a few days later than what was originally scheduled. WOU and WWU will play on Tuesday afternoon in Great Northwest Athletic Conference action starting at 2 p.m. inside New PE Gym.
WOU (7-8, 3-5 GNAC) is coming off of a back-and-forth game against Simon Fraser on Thursday where the game went right down to the end before SFU held on for the three-point victory. Meadow Aragon led the Wolves with 17 points and both Tresai McCarver and Cali McClave added 11 points apiece.
WOU continued to add up the blocked shots with Aragon sending back five and Amber Winkler adding two against Simon Fraser. Entering the week, WOU averages 66.1 points, connecting on 366-898 (40.8) from the field, 81-289 (28) from three and 178-257 (69.3) at the foul line. The Wolves also average 40 rebounds, 14.2 assists, 8.4 steals and 5.4 blocks. Opponents average 65.3 points, making 338-898 (37.6) from the field, 98-306 (32) from three and 206-303 (68) at the foul line. Opponents also average 36.2 rebounds, 13.1 assists, 8.4 steals and 2.9 blocks.
Aragon leads the Wolves in points per game (12.6), rebounds (7.3), field goals (57), and blocks (28). McCarver leads the team in assists with 66, free throws with 51 and steals with 27. She also adds 11.4 points and 5.4 rebounds, along with 54 field goals. Cali McClave is third on the team in points (9.4), while leading the team in three-pointers (18) and also has 24 steals. Madisyn Clark adds 7.1 points and 14 three-pointers, along with 26 assists. Alexis Wright adds 5.7 points, 3.9 rebounds and is shooting over 50 percent from the field. Kaelin Williams-Kennedy tallies 5.4 points per game. Winkler is second on the team in blocks with 22.
Western Washington has gone 8-2 over the past 10 meetings in the series with both of the wins for the Wolves coming in Monmouth. During the last meeting in Monmouth, WOU claimed the wild 73-70 double-overtime victory. Then during the 2017-18 season, the Wolves tallied a 54-50 home victory.
During the first meeting of the team on Dec. 30 in Bellingham, the Vikings took the 70-52 win. Cali McClave led the Wolves with 16 points, while Wright added nine points.
Western Washington is 12-1 overall and 4-1 in GNAC play with their only loss coming at home to Central Washington back on Jan. 13 (76-68). Since then, the Vikings traveled to Alaska picking up wins over Alaska Anchorage and Alaska Fairbanks.
WWU is averaging 70.6 points per game, making 350-755 (46.4) from the field, 77-223 (34.5) from three and 141-198 (71.2) at the foul line. The Vikings also average 40.6 rebounds, 14.6 assists, 7.4 steals and four blocks per game. Opponents average 52.7 points per game, making 240-730 (32.9) from the field, 44-212 (20.8) from three and 161-239 (67.4) from the foul line. Opponents also average 30.1 rebounds, 8.9 assists, 7.2 steals and 2.4 blocks per game.
Emma Duff leads the Vikings averaging 15 points, 7.7 rebounds, 25 assists and 14 blocks. Mollie Olson adds 10.4 points, 3.4 rebounds and 24 assists. Dani Iwami is third on the team in scoring (8.2) and adds 28 assists, but has missed the previous two games. Carley Zaragoza is at 7.5 points and Avery Dykstra adds 7.4 points per game.
