MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's soccer team seemingly has been on the verge of a winning result several times this season, just to fall short.
The Wolves' persistence paid off as they put together a strong, well-rounded effort to defeat Saint Martin's 2-0 Sunday at the WOU Turf Field - the first-year program's first conference victory.
WOU (2-10-2 overall, 1-7-1 GNAC) kept the Saints (2-10-2, 2-5-1) attack at bay - holding them to just one shot on goal and seven shots overall.
On the other end, while the Wolves didn't have many more chances (eight shots, three on goal) - they were much more opportunistic with theirs.
It started in the 27th minute when on a breakaway
Abraham Villalobos hit
Alex Grignon who beat the keeper for his team-high fourth goal of the season to make it 1-0.
The Wolves gave themselves breathing room in the 68th minute as a beautiful long pass from
Jesua Pena-Herrera hit Villalobos on the run and the talented freshman did the rest - putting the ball firmly in the goal to make it 2-0.
Villalobos led the team with five shots and two on goal to go along with his goal and assist on the day. At keeper,
Juan Suarez didn't have to do much in terms of saves (one) - but was a key component in keeping the Wolves defense in proper shape.
WOU returns to action 1:30 p.m. Thursday at home against Simon Fraser.Â
