WOU volleyball edges out key third set to propel past MSU Billings in four

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon volleyball team edged out a key third set to propel it past Montana State Billings 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 27-25, 25-19) Thursday night at New PE Building.

The Wolves (9-12 overall, 5-8 GNAC) and Yellowjackets (7-16, 0-14) were tied 1-1 after MSUB took the second set 25-23 following a 25-16 win of set one by WOU.

The Wolves led the third set 23-18 before the Yellowjackets went on a 4-0 run (all on WOU errors) to cut the lead to one at 23-22. A kill by Bailee Hartsook stopped the run and gave WOU set point at 24-22, but a service error, an Olivia Schwartz kill and an attack error suddenly flipped the set toward MSUB as it held set point at 25-24.

But a dig by MSUB crossed over the net and Bella MacLellan was there to put it away to fight off the set point. A pair of attack errors by MSUB gave WOU the set 27-25.

The Wolves cruised in the fourth set with Sarah Crowell capping the match with a kill - making the fourth set final 25-19.

Crowell, Madison Hornback and Delaney Smith had 13 kills apiece to lead the way for the Wolves. Laney O'Neil added 32 assists and a team-high 17 digs while MacLellan had four blocks to go along with seven kills.

WOU returns to action 7 p.m. Saturday at home against Seattle Pacific.
