MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's basketball team erased a 10-point, second-half deficit to force overtime, but fell short to Western Washington 95-93 Thursday night at New PE Building.
The Wolves (4-6 overall, 1-2 GNAC) trailed the Vikings (9-3, 2-0) 78-68 with 10:15 remaining in the contest before a bucket and a 3-pointer by
Jahville Collins within a 39-second span quickly cut the lead to five.
WOU eventually tied the game after a
Daisone Hughes steal led to a
Qiant Myers layup with 2:57 remaining to make it 83-83. The Wolves took an 85-84 lead on a Collins jumper at the 2:06 mark, but was down 87-85 before Collins again came through with a layup with 59 seconds left in the game. The Vikings had two shots to win it in regulation, but missed both shots.
In overtime, the contest was tied 93-93 before WWU's BJ Kolly grabbed an offensive rebound and scored with eight seconds left to make it 95-93. WOU had a pair of chances to tie it down the stretch, but couldn't come through.
The free throw line (6-for-17), turnovers (22 - though WOU forced 23 WWU turnovers) and 3-point shooting (WOU was 3-for-12, WWU was 12-for-32) turned out to be the difference in the contest.
Cameron Cranston led four Wolves in double figures with 21 points to go along wit hfour rebounds and two assists. Collins finished with 19 points and seven rebounds,
Cameron Benzel had 19 points, five rebounds, three assists and two steals while
John Morrill-Keeler had 12 points, six rebounds and two steals.
WOU returns to action 2 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Simon Fraser.
