LACEY, Wash. – It will be a quick road trip for the Western Oregon University women's basketball team as they will travel up the road to play at Saint Martin's on Saturday starting at 5:15 p.m. The Wolves will then come home to play Alaska Anchorage on Tuesday before traveling to Seattle Pacific and Montana State Billings to close the week.
WOU (7-9, 3-6 GNAC) stayed right with No. 9 Western Washington until halftime and then a big third quarter helped the Vikings claim the win. The game before that, the Wolves went right down to the end with Simon Fraser before SFU escaped with the three-point win.
This will be the second meeting between WOU and Saint Martin's as they faced each other back on Jan. 8 in Monmouth. The Wolves took the 68-64 victory after the Saints made a furious rally in the second half to get close. Tresai McCarver nearly went for a triple-double with 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists. Madisyn Clark added 15 points and Amber Winkler with 12 points and six rebounds.
On the season, WOU averages 65.6 points, making 384-949 (40.5) from the field, 84-298 (28.2) from three and 198-282 (70.2) at the foul line. The Wolves also average 39.4 rebounds, 13.9 assists, 8.5 steals and 5.4 blocks. Opponents average 66.1 points, making 370-952 (38.9) from the field, 102-319 (32) from three and 215-320 (67.2) at the foul line. Opponents also average 35.8 rebounds, 13.5 assists, 8.9 steals and 3.1 blocks.
Meadow Aragon leads the Wolves in points (12.7), rebounds (7.0), blocks (29), and field goals (63). McCarver leads the team in assists (67), free throws (51), and steals (29), while adding 11.1 points, 5.3 rebounds and has made 56 field goals. Cali McClave adds 9.0 points per game, along with 3.4 rebounds, a team-high 18 three-pointers, 33 assists and 25 steals. Clark tallies 7.3 points and 28 assists. Alexis Wright is at 5.7 points and Kaelin Williams-Kennedy is at 5.3 points. Winkler is second on the team in blocks with 24.
Saint Martin's is 10-7 overall and 2-6 in GNAC play this season. They split their past two games against Simon Fraser winning at home, before falling in Canada last time out this past Tuesday. The Saints average 65.1 points per game, making 411-987 (41.6) from the field, 80-288 (27.8) from three and 205-287 (71.4) at the foul line. The Saints also average 35.9 rebounds, 14.8 assists, 7.5 steals and 2.4 blocks per game. Opponents average 63.1 points, making 387-1,037 (37.3) from the field, 94-329 (28.6) from three and 205-277 (74) at the foul line. Opponents also average 31.5 rebounds, 12.8 assists, 9.5 steals and 2.4 blocks per game.
Claire Dingus leads the Saints averaging 17.3 points, along with 8.3 rebounds and 43 steals. Rian Clear adds 13.7 points, along with 4.4 rebounds and has made 25 three-pointers. Tierney DeDonatis averages in double-figures at 11.1 points, 78 assists and has a team-high 28 three-pointers.
With WOU's win earlier this season snapped a three-game winning streak in the series against Saint Martin's. The teams have split the past 10 meetings and WOU is 4-16 on the road at Saint Martin's since 2001.
