IRVINE, Calif. – The Western Oregon University softball team split the second day of the Concordia Irvine Tournament on Saturday. The Wolves opened the day with a solid 4-1 win over Stanislaus State before playing the night game against Cal State San Marcos with the Cougars taking the 10-1 victory. WOU is 2-2 in the tournament so far with one game left on Sunday against San Francisco State.
In the first game of the day on Saturday, WOU (4-2) kept Stanislaus State (2-1) to just one run with a strong start by Maddie Mayer going six innings for the win. The left-hander allowed no runs on five hits, two walks and added three strikeouts to improve to 2-0 on the season. At the plate, Logan Carlos provided all the offense Mayer and the Wolves would need going 3-4 with three RBI. Zoie Recolan, Maddie Brandner and Kate Ronning all added hits. Recolan added an RBI.
The Wolves put up all of the runs they would need in the second inning. Sophie Franklin opened the inning being hit-by-pitch. Brandner then reached on a fielder's choice. Ronning singled to put runners on first and second before Hannah Stewart walked to load the bases. Carlos came through with the big hit when she tripled to right-center to clear the bases. Following the second out, Recolan brought home Carlos with a single through the left side for the 4-0 lead.
Mayer took it from there. Working around two baserunners in the third and then left two more runners stranded in the sixth to keep the lead at 4-0.
The Warriors tallied their only run in the seventh, but Nicki Derrick was able to get a pop up to end the game with WOU taking the 4-1 victory.
Stanislaus State held a 7-6 edge in hits and the teams combined for three errors, two committed by the Warriors.
Sidney Crippen-Lay, Madison Flexser and Lauryn Serda led the Warriors with two hits apiece. Crippen-Lay drove in the only run. Kyndra Marzorini started in the circle for Stanislaus State and went the first two innings, allowing four earned runs to end up with the loss (1-1). Delaney Pamplin went the final four innings and didn't allow a run.
In the second game, each team recorded an early run in the first. With Cal State San Marcos (3-1) as the away team, they tallied a run in the opening frame. The Wolves came back in the home half. Maddie Doig hit a one out double to left and then came home on an RBI single to center by Recolan to tie the game at one.
The Cougars took the lead for good in the third plating three runs on four hits for the 4-1 lead. Cal State San Marcos added a run in the fifth, three in the sixth and two more in the seventh to move out to a 10-1 lead.
WOU was able to get a couple of runners on in the seventh with Natalie Willoughby singling and Carlos adding a single, but a fly out ended the inning and the game.
The Cougars held a 15-6 edge in hits and Cal State San Marcos committed the only error in the game.
Carlos and Doig led the Wolves with two hits apiece and Recolan tallied the RBI. Reilly Tidwell started in the circle for the Wolves and went the first two innings to end up with the loss (0-1) allowing four earned runs with two strikeouts. Chelsea Smith went the final five innings and allowed six earned runs, along with five strikeouts.
Paige Donnelly, Savannah Coyle, Gianna Lombardi, Morgan Salgado and Sammie Olivo all led Cal State San Marcos with two hits. Donnelly tallied three RBI, with Salgado and Aneesa Arredondo adding two RBI apiece. In the circle, Jayline Sloss started and went the first two innings allowing one earned run. Coyle went the final five innings to get the win (1-0) allowing no runs.
WOU concludes the Concordia Irvine Tournament on Sunday morning starting at 9 a.m. against San Francisco State.
