INDIANAPOLIS – Following a bye week, the Western Oregon University baseball team stayed seventh in the latest NCAA West Regional Rankings that were released on Wednesday.
Point Loma continues to lead the rankings with a 39-7 overall DII record. The top-four remain the same with Azusa Pacific second (32-14), Cal State Monterey Bay in third (36-13) and Chico State in fourth (28-14). Northwest Nazarene surged from eighth to fifth in the rankings this week following their four-game sweep of Montana State Billings and are 25-19 in overall DII games on the year. Just ahead of WOU is Cal Poly Pomona in sixth (28-17) and Western Oregon stays in seventh with the 23-15 overall DII record. Rounding out the top eight is Fresno Pacific with a 27-19 overall DII record.
The top six teams in the region will advance to the NCAA West Regional that will be hosted by the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds. With the CCAA competing this year, that expanded the field from last year's three teams to six, as the PacWest and GNAC also comprise the region. The GNAC still has an auto bid for the team that wins the GNAC Championships, so if somehow none of the GNAC teams end up ranked in the top six in the final rankings, the team that wins GNAC will receive an auto bid into the top six. Entering this week, both Western Oregon and Northwest Nazarene have clinched their spots for the championships that will be hosted by WOU in Monmouth. The third and final spot will come down to Montana State Billings and Saint Martin's, as both teams are tied with 13-15 GNAC records.
The NCAA will release the rankings one more time next week (May 11), before the selection show will take place on ncaa.com for baseball on Sunday, May 15 starting at 7 p.m. (Pacific).
WOU is currently playing at Saint Martin's today and will conclude that four-game GNAC series on Saturday in Lacey.
