ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --- The Western Oregon women's soccer team got the season off on a high note as the Wolves went on the road and defeated 20th-ranked Sonoma State 1-0 Thursday at Seawolf Soccer Field.
WOU (1-0) got on the board in the 10th minute on a goal knocked into the top-right corner by
Jenna Efraimson to make it 1-0.
From there, the Wolves withstood a barrage of shots from the Seawolves (0-1) as Sonoma State outshot WOU 34-5 in the contest. However, keeper
Olivia Holdenried stood tall and didn't let one of the 14 shots on goal get past her to preserve the shutout - including nine saves alone in the second half.
Along with Efraimson's shot,
Chloe Smith and
Leeci Snyder had two shots apiece for the Wolves.
WOU returns home as it will host Colorado Mesa - the defending Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference champions - noon Sunday at WOU Soccer Field.
