MONMOUTH, Oregon --- The Western Oregon women's soccer team for the second time this week took down a defending conference champion as the Wolves held off Colorado Mesa in a wild final 10 minutes 3-2 Sunday afternoon at WOU Soccer Field.
WOU (2-0), who defeated CCAAÂ defending champ and 20th-ranked Sonoma State on Thursday, took a 2-1 lead on the defending RMAC champion Mavericks (0-2) in the 82nd minute when
Savannah Taylor hustling back took a offline pass from Colorado Mesa, tapped it just before the keeper could it and then put it in the net.
The Mavericks answered less than two minutes later after the Wolves were called for a hand ball in the penalty area. CMU's Lila Dere put in the penalty shot to make it 2-2 in the 84th minute.
But just a minute later WOU took the lead for good as a loose ball bouncing 35 yards out was booted high in the air by
Lulu Sadler that arched over the CMU keeper and into the net to make it 3-2 in the 8th minute.
The Wolves held on from there to move to 2-0 on the season.
The Mavericks got on the board first as Addie Randel scored off a shot deflected off of the WOU keeper in the 38th minute. The Wolves quickly answered in the 39th minute on an
Emma Smith goal assisted by
Alyna Slayter.
It was an even contest as far as shots with the Mavs outshooting the Wolves 15-14, including 8-6 on shots on goal.
Olivia Holdenried picked up six saves while only allowing one goal in play (the other being a penalty shot) for Western Oregon.
The Wolves return to action Thursday as they travel to take on Colorado Christian.
