MONMOUTH, Oregon --- The 19th-ranked Western Oregon women's soccer team opened GNAC play in impressive fashion as the Wolves defeated Saint Maritn's 2-0 Thursday afternoon at the WOU Soccer Field.Â
WOU (4-0-1 overall, 1-0 GNAC) dominated play, outshooting the Saints (2-2, 0-1) 21-4 in the game, including 11-1 on shots on goal.
It was an overwhelming first half by the Wolves as they outshot SMU 17-0 (10-0 on shots on goal) and scored both their goals in the opening 45 minutes.
WOU got on the board in the 22nd minute when a long pass down the sideline by
Elizabeth Parker found
Briana Kubli on the right side and she crossed it in front of the goal where
Chloe Smith was there to knock it in to make it 1-0.
It was Parker again getting a scoring run going for the Wolves in the 45th minute as her throw in hit
Savannah Taylor on the right side who crossed it to find
Alyssa Talkington for the goal with just 13 seconds left in the half to make it 2-0.
Smith and Taylor led WOU with four shots apiece while
Leeci Snyder had a few chances with three shots - two on goal.
Olivia Holdenried (81 minutes) and
Isabella Lopez (nine minutes) combined on the shutout for the Wolves with Lopez making the lone save for WOU in the game.
WOU returns to action 2 p.m. Saturday as it hosts Western Washington at WOU Soccer Field.
