WOU women's basketball battles tough, comes up short against Alaska Anchorage

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon women's basketball team hung around and gave Alaska Anchorage a run for its money, but the Wolves fell short 69-61 Thursday night at New PE Building.

The Wolves (7-9 overall, 1-7 GNAC) after falling behind 14-7 at the end of the first quarter battled back against the Seawolves (12-5, 4-4) in the second quarter. Trailing 22-15, a 3-pointer from Ana McClave from the corner ignited an 8-0 run - capped by a Princy Paaluhi-Caulk three-point play to make it 23-22 WOU with 2:14 left in the second quarter. The Wolves led 27-26 with under 20 seconds left before Jahnna Hajdukovich drained one of her seven 3-pointers on the night in the final seconds to give UAA a 29-27 halftime lead.

The teams traded the lead throughout the third quarter with WOU taking a 53-51 advantage with seven minutes left in the contest. However, it would be its last lead as another Hajdukovich 3-pointer on the Seawolves' next possession gave UAA the lead and it wouldn't relinquish it the rest of the contest.

WOU would cut the lead to 63-61 with 4:03 remaining in the contest and 3-pointer from Amber Winkler, but unfortunately for the Wolves it was their final points of the game as UAA closed the game on a 6-0 run.

Cali McClave paced the Wolves with 22 points to go along with four assists. Kiylynn Dawkins reached double figures with 11 points to go along with eight rebounds.

WOU returns to action 2 p.m. Saturday when it hosts Alaska Fairbanks.
