Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Make it three in a row for the WOU men as the Wolves beat Simon Fraser on the road

BURNABY, B.C. --- The Western Oregon men's basketball team for the second straight game held off a last-second, game-tying attempt - this time to hold off Simon Fraser 75-73 Saturday at West Gym.

The Wolves (8-9 overall, 5-5 GNAC) led by as much as 13 points in the first half and 11 points early in the second half before the Red Leafs (6-14, 1-9) stormed back to not only tie the game, but take the lead 43-40 after a 14-0 capped by a 3-pointer at the 15:08 mark in the second half.

Neither team led by more than five points the rest of the way with SFU holding a 73-72 lead with less than a minute left in the contest. That's when John Morrill-Keeler grabbed his own miss and put it back with 50 seconds left to make it 74-73 WOU.

After a missed shot by the Red Leafs and a rebound by Cameron Benzel, Qiant Myers was fouled and split a pair of free throws with 28 seconds left to make it 75-73.

The Red Leafs got a steal with 10 seconds left after they missed on their next possession and had a shot near the basket to tie it, but it rimmed out and the Wolves held on for the win.

Yosani Clay had a big game off the bench for the Wolves, scoring a team-high 16 points - including going 4-for-7 from 3-point range. Overall, the Wolves went 8-for-13 from 3-point range and 50.8 percent from the field - making up for a 7-for-15 performance at the free-throw line. Benzel added 14 points, five rebounds and two blocks, Morrill-Keeler just missed a double-double with 10 points, nine rebounds, three blocks and two steals while Myers had nine points and a team-high five assists.

WOU heads to Bellingham, Washington, next to take on Western Washington 7 p.m. Saturday.
