BURNABY, B.C. — The Western Oregon women's soccer team scored a season high in goals with a 3-1 victory over Simon Fraser at Terry Fox Field on Saturday afternoon.
It was a key three points for the Wolves (8-4-4 overall, 5-4-3 GNAC) as they entered the contest tied with Simon Fraser (5-5-4, 4-5-3) for third place as they now take sole possession of third with 18 points with two matches remaining. The top four teams make the GNAC tournament.
The Wolves' attack wasted no time in finding the back of the net Saturday, scoring in the fourth minute. Olivia Johnsrud sent a long pass into the box that Jenna Efraimson headed past the keeper. This marked Efraimson's first goal and Johnsrud's first assist of the season.
WOU added their second goal in the 36th minute when Hannah Rispler fed Efraimson down the sideline and Efraimson passed to a cutting Haley King, who slotted the ball into the bottom right corner. King's goal was her first of the season.
The Red Leafs managed to get on the scoreboard in the 55th minute, but the Wolves pulled away thanks to a goal from Lauren Rose. In the 75th minute, Rose executed a give-and-go play, assisted by Caprial Loescher. This marked Rose's first goal and Loescher's first assist of the season.
Goalkeeper Darien Walton recorded two saves in the match.
The Red Leafs outshot the Wolves 9-6 in the contest, but WOU had more shots on goal (4-3).
The Wolves are back on the road as they face off against Central Washington on Thursday (3 p.m.).
