Wolves ground games eats up Mustangs in 31-10 win in Monmouth

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon football team racked up 376 rushing yards and controlled the game from start to finish in a 31-10 victory over Western New Mexico on Saturday at McArthur Field.

Five players rushed for more than 35 yards in the contest with Dominique Loggins leading the Wolves (3-3 overall, 2-2 LSC) with 125 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries (7.4 yards per carry). Austin Bacher rushed for 73 yards on 11 carries, Kainoa Jones had 64 rushing yards, Jordan McCarty had 48 rushing yards and a score on the ground and Jermaine Land finished with 38 yards rushing.

The Wolves - who finished with 476 yards of offense - got on the board in the first quarter through the air, however, as Gannon Winker hit London Smalley for a 5-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 with 7:37 left in the period. Loggins put the Wolves up 14-0 with a 35-yard touchdown run with 26 seconds left in the first and the score remained that way until the third quarter.

WNMU kicked a field goal to make it 14-3 before a safety thanks to a tackle in the end zone by Josephy Northcutt and Gio Antonini pushed the Wolves lead to 16-3. WOU scored two more touchdowns (Loggins 4-yard run, McCarty 9-yard run) to push the lead to 31-3 before the Mustangs (1-5, 0-4) scored their lone touchdown midway through the fourth.

Winker finished 8-1for12 for 51 yards while Jaylen Fite had two catches for 64 yards to lead the WOU receivers.

Defensively, the Wolves held WNMU to 11 yards rushing and 325 yards of offense. Tyler Copeland led the Wolves with seven tackles while Erick Gonzalez had six and Malcolm Liufau had five tackles, a sack and three quarterback hurries. Overall, the Wolves had 18 quarterback hurries on the Mustangs' 52 passing attempts.

WOU returns to action next Saturday in a non-conference contest at Minnesota State.
