MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's soccer team this season time and again has showed a second-half magic to pull out wins and draws - and Thursday was no different.
The Wolves used a pair of second half goals to turn a 1-0 halftime deficit against Montana State Billings into a 2-1 victory at WOU Turf Field to keep pace with first-place Simon Fraser in the GNAC standings.
WOU (10-3-2 overall, 7-1-2 GNAC) made a mistake on the back half in the fifth minute that led to a quick goal for the Yellowjackets (4-7-3, 1-5-2) .
The score remained that way until the 62nd minute whenÂ
Andres Labate scored on a corner to even up the contest.
The Wolves kept the momentum and in the 79th minute took the lead when Labate passed it to the right side to
Edson Jimenez who crossed it to
Alex Grignon for the go-ahead tally to make it 2-1.
WOU outshot the Yellowjackets 17-9, including 6-5 on shots on goal.
Juan Suarez finished with four saves for WOU.
With the standings now going to points per game due to weather-related cancelations - WOU now sits at 2.30 points per contest - only behind Simon Fraser's 2.75 (the Red Leafs won Thursday as well).
The Wolves have two matches remaining, a home contest against Seattle Pacific 11 a.m. Saturday before ending the season at Seattle Pacific the following Saturday. SFU has three matches remaining.
