MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's basketball team was right on the heels of Northwest Nazarene for much of the second half and had a final shot at the end to tie it, but the Wolves fell 65-62 Saturday afternoon at New PE Building.
WOU (3-5 overall, 0-2 GNAC) trailed by as much as 13 points in the first half and was down 38-32 before falling behind 50-38 with 13:21 left in the contest.
But the Wolves rallied as it slowly chopped away at the NNU (4-3, 2-0) lead, tying the game with 1:01 remaining on a
Cameron Benzel follow-up dunk to make it 60-60.
NNU took the lead 63-60 on its next possession on a three-point play before a
Qiant Myers bucket with 28 seconds cut the lead to 63-62. WOU was forced to foul and the Nighthawks drained both free throws to make it a three-point lead.
The Wolves would have two shots down the stretch to tie the game, but both 3-pointers were off the mark as WOU dropped the home contest.
Jason Gallant paced the Wolves with 16 points to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.
Kris Cook and Myers each had 12 points while
Cameron Benzel just missed a double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.
