TYLER, Texas --- The Western Oregon softball team led 3-0 early against No. 3 UT Tyler in game two of a doubleheader Saturday, but fell short 6-4 and lost game one 8-0 at Irwin Ballpark.
The Wolves (5-6) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on UT Tyler (6-1) when
Natalie Willoughby hits a two-run single to right to score
Sophie Franklin and
Bella Valdes.
The lead grew to 3-0 when Conklin hit an RBI single to left to score
Katelyn McGough.
But UTT scored one in the second, three in the third and two more in the fourth to take a 6-3 lead.
The Wolves cut the lead to 6-4 in the fifth inning on a
Logan Carlos infield single that led to an error that scored Franklin. But that's as close as the Wolves got.
Valdes went 2-for-4 with a run, Willoughby went 2-for-4 with two RBI and
Maddie Brandner went 2-for-3 with a double.
Chelsea Smith picked up the loss in the circle, going four innings and giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits with three strikeouts and four walks. Nick Derrick pitched a hitless and scoreless two innings for the Wolves in relief.
In the first game, the Wolves managed four hits in the 8-0 loss with
Kirah McGlothan with half of those, going 2-for-3 with a double and stolen base.
Maddie Mayer took the loss, going three innings and giving up four runs on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.
These two teams wrap up the three-game series 9 a.m. Sunday (PT).
