TYLER, Texas --- The Western Oregon softball team gave No. 3 UT Tyler a run for its money Sunday, but fell short as the Wolves lost 2-1 at Suddenlink Field.
WOU (5-7) fell behind 2-0 after UTT (7-1) scored single runs in the second and third inning.
But Mayer shut down UTT from there, giving up just two infield hits in the final three innings as she went the distance, giving up two runs on five hits with four strikeouts and three walks.
WOU cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth when
Natalie Willoughby homered to left-center field - her first of the season (she had 11 homers last season to lead the team). The Wolves looked as though they may get something going as
Kirah McGlothan and
Lexi Carlos followed with singles to put runners on first and second and one out, but UTT was able to get out of the jam.
Willoughby and
Chelby Smalley each had two hits for the Wolves.
WOU returns to action Friday at the Cactus Classic in Tucson, Arizona.
