TUCSON, Ariz. --- The Western Oregon softball team opened play at the Cactus Classic with a pair of wins - beating Franklin Pierce 9-1 in five innings and University of Minnesota Crookston 11-5 on Friday.
The Wolves (7-7) in the first game used a six-run fourth inning to pull away (highlighted by a
Katelyn McGough homer) and two more in the fifth to force the run rule.Â
McGough finished 2-for-3 with a homer, a double and two runs,
Natalie Willoughby went 2-for-2 with a double, two RBI and two runs and Logan Carslos was 1-for-1 with two runs and two RBI.
Chelsea Smith picked up her third win of the season in the circle, going five innings and giving up a run on two hits with 10 strikeouts and no walks.
In the game against UMC, WOU trailed 3-1 heading into the fourth inning before scoring three in the fourth (highlighted by a
McKenna Marshall two-run single), three in the fifth (a two-run double by Marshall in that inning), one in the sixth and a three-run seventh (Carlos with a two-run double in the inning).
Marshall finished 2-for-4 with four RBI,
Maddie Doig was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI,
Natalie Willoughby was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI and Carlos finished 1-for-3 with two RBI, two runs and two walks.
Maddie Mayer moved to 4-3 on the season - going five innings and giving up four runs on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
WOU returns to action Saturday with a pair of games taking on Mercyhurst at 9 a.m. (PT) and Georgian Court at 11 a.m. (PT).
