FAIRBANKS, Alaska --- An explosive, sharp-shooting first quarter by the Western Oregon women's basketball team set the tone for an 87-68 victory over Alaska Fairbanks on Thursday at the Patty Center.
WOU (11-12 overall, 5-10 GNAC) scored 32 points on 13-for-18 shooting - including 5-for-6 from 3-point range - in the first quarter and doubled up the Nanooks (4-18, 1-14) for a 32-16 lead heading into the second.
UAF cut the Wolves' leads to 12 at the half, but WOU would extend the lead in each of the final two quarters to come away with the win.
"This was a great team win," WOU coach
Holli Howard-Carpenter said. "UAF is a tough place to play and they can score with anyone in the league. We shared and shot the ball well tonight and that's when we're at our best. Defensively I thought we were pretty consistent but just sent them to the line too many times."
Cali McClave had a season-high 29 points, going 10-for-19 from the field - including 4-for-8 from three - while adding seven rebounds and four assists.
Kiylynn Dawkins had 13 points,
Princy Paaluhi-Caulk had 10 points as did
Gracie Arnold off the bench - going 5-for-5 from the field.
Ana McClave led the team in rebounds (12), assists (5) and steals (3).
"Cali absolutely competed tonight and lead the charge for us," Howard-Carpenter added. "We got great minutes from our bench as well, we found a way to get Gracie the ball and she made some tough shots look easy."
WOU returns to action Saturday at Alaska Anchorage.
