WOU softball defeats #11 Cal State San Marcos, #19 Concordia Irvine on Saturday

IRVINE, Calif. --- It was an impressive day for the Western Oregon softball team Saturday as the Wolves started the day with a 2-1 win over 11th-ranked Cal State San Marcos before defeating No. 19 Concordia 2-1 at the Concordia Kickoff.

It's the first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 2 Texas A&M-Kingsville Feb. 14, 2020.

WOU (5-1 overall) opened the day against San Marcos and got a run in the first on a Maddie Doig RBI groundout to score Sophie Franklin and a run in the sixth on a Baylie Kahele RBI single to right center to score Kirah McGlothan.

It was just enough for Wolves left-hander Maddie Mayer as she gave up a run on five hits with four strikeouts while tossing a complete game. At the plate, Bella Valdes paced WOU - going 2-for-3.

In the contest against CUI, the Wolves trailed 1-0 heading into the fourth before pinch-hitter McKenna Marshall hit an infield RBI single to score pinch-runner Victoria Zimmerman to tie the game. Two innings later Sophie Franklin drove in McGlothan with an RBI single to give WOU a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the sixth.

Like Mayer, it was just enough for pitcher Chelsea Smith as she went the distance and gave up one run on four hits with 10 strikeouts and six walks.

McGlothan paced the Wolves at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a run.

WOU concludes play at the event 9 a.m. Sunday against Cal State East Bay.
