MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's basketball team got 32 points from
Cameron Cranston and had its chances, but fell short in just the eighth triple-overtime game in GNAC history to first-place MSU Billings 91-88 Thursday night at New PE Building.
The Wolves (9-11 overall, 6-7 GNAC) and Yellowjackets (19-5, 13-1) traded the lead 28 times in the contest and were tied another 18 times in a game where neither team led by double figures.
The game got sent to overtime when
Daisone Hughes drained a free throw with less than a second left to tie the game at 60.
In the first overtime, the Wolves tied the game at 70 with 41 seconds left on a Cranston jumper. On MSUB's next possession, Cranston blocked a layup attempt - but the Wolves were called for an offensive foul on an illegal screen with five seconds left. The Yellowjackets shot a three at the buzzer - but it was off the mark.
In the second overtime, WOU took a 78-76 lead with 2:09 left on a
Cameron Benzel jumper - but it would be the last points of the overtime as MSUB eventually tied it with a bucket from Jalen Tot as he was fouled to tie the game (he missed the free throw). Cranston drove to the lane in the final seconds and put up a shot, but it barely rimmed out and the teams headed to a third overtime.
The Wolves led 88-87 after a Cranston basket in the paint with 59 seconds left, but a three-point play by Bilal Shabazz with 20 seconds gave MSUB the lead at 90-88. WOU was fouled with three seconds remaining, but missed the first and had to intentionally miss the second - however MSUB came up with the rebound and was fouled, splitting the free throws as the Wolves wouldn't get another shot off.
Cranston had 32 points - going 4-for-9 from 3-point range - while
John Morrill-Keeler had 16 points, eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals. Benzel just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds while Hughes had a team-high six assists to go along with five points, four rebounds and two steals.
The free throw line hurt WOU as it went just 9-for-20 from the charity stripe.
The Wolves look to bounce back 4:15 p.m. Saturday as they host Seattle Pacific.
