LACEY, Wash. --- The Western Oregon softball team opened GNAC play at Saint Martin's with a doubleheader split, winning the first game 5-4 and dropping the second 5-2 Saturday at Saints Field.

The Wolves (9-14 overall, 1-1 GNAC) in the first game trailed 1-0 before a four-run fourth - highlighted by a Maddie Brander two-run single - to take a 4-1 lead. The Saints answered with two runs in the fourth and another in the fifth to tie the game.

WOU took the lead in the seventh when Chelby Smalley singled to score Carly Turpen and the Wolves held on for the win.

Smalley led the Wolves at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI and run. Maddie Mayer got the win in relief, going 3.1 innings and giving up one unearned run on one hit with six strikeouts and a walk.

In game two the Wolves took a quick 1-0 lead in the first on a Katelyn McGough RBI double, but SMU scored five unanswered runs and went on to win 5-2.

McGough paced WOU at hte plate, going 3-for-3 with two doubles, an RBI and a run. Erica Soliz got the loss, going two innings and giving up four runs on five hits with two strikeouts.

The two teams play another doubleheader starting 11 a.m. Sunday in Lacey.
