MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon softball team took both ends of a doubleheader, 5-2 and 2-1, from Simon Fraser Friday at WOU Softball Field.
Â
The Wolves (11-14, 3-1) used a three-run outburst in the first inning of game – capped by a
Maddie Doig RBI double to right – to take the lead for what turned out to be for good as WOU added a run in the third on a
Katelyn McGough homer to center and a
Bella Valdes RBI groundout in the fifth.
Â
Maddie Mayer did the rest in the circle for the Wolves – going the distance and giving up two runs on five hits with six strikeouts and two walks. At the plate,
Natalie Willoughby was 2-for-2 with an RBI,
Logan Carlos was 2-for-3 with a double and a run and Doig was 2-for-3 with an RBI and double.
The second game was scoreless until SFU's (6-18, 1-5) Amy Hughes hit a solo homer in the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.
The score remained that way until the Wolves pushed two across in the fifth - one on a Red Leaf error after
Victoria Zimmerman bunt singled and the ball was thrown away to score
Chelby Smalley and the other on a Doig RBI groundout.
Chelsea Smith did the rest as she gave up just the one run on five hits with 10 strikeouts and four walks. McGough paced the Wolves at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a run.
The teams play another doubleheader starting noon Saturday at WOU Softball Field.
