WOU sweeps doubleheader Saturday, four-game series with Simon Fraser

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon softball team completed a four-game sweep of Simon Fraser as the Wolves defeated the Red Leafs 6-4 and 10-0 at WOU Softball Field.

It's the first four-game sweep for the Wolves since taking four in a row at home agianst MSU Billings April 11-12, 2016.
 
In game one, the Red Leafs jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first before the Wolves tied it in the bottom of the inning on a Natalie Willoughby sacrifice fly and a Maddie Doig RBI single.
 
WOU took the lead in the third when Katelyn McGough crushed the first pitch of the at-bat over the left field fence for a three-run homer to make it 5-2. The Wolves added another on a solo home run by Willoughby in the fourth before Simon Fraser scored two in the sixth to make the final 6-4.
 
McGough finished 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBI, Doig was 2-for-3 with an RBI and Maddie Brandner went 2-for-2 with a run.
 
Maddie Mayer picked up the win, going six innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Nicki Derrick got the save, giving up just a lone single while striking out three in an inning of work.
 
In game two, the Wolves used a seven-run second inning to jump out to a commanding lead, getting a two-run double from Brandner, an RBI single by Logan Carlos, an RBI on a walk by McGough, a Willoughby RBI single and a two-run single from Sophie Franklin to make it 7-0.

WOU added three more in the fourth on RBI singles from Willoughby, Doig and Brandner to make it 10-0 and the Wolves pitching staff did the rest to pick up the five-inning, run-rule victory.

Willoughby led Wolves at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run, Brandner finished 2-for-3 with three RBI, Franklin was 2-for-2 with two RBI and a run, Doig was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI while Logan Carlos was 2-for-4 with a run and RBI.

Chelsea Smith and Derrick combined on the shutout with Smith going four innings and giving up three hits while striking out five and Derrick pitched a final scoreless inning.

WOU returns to action Saturday at Western Washington.
