WOU softball splits a pair of extra-inning games at Western Washington on Sunday

BELLINGHAM, Wash. --- The Western Oregon softball team split a pair of extra-inning games Sunday against Western Washington, winning the first game 10-8 in nine innings before dropping the second game 3-2 in eight innings at Viking Field.

In the first game, the Wolves (14-15 Overall, 6-2 GNAC) used an eight-run third inning - highlighted by a three-run double to right by Maddie Brandner - take an 8-3 lead on the Vikings (13-13, 5-5). WWU scored two in the third and three more in the fourth to tie the game 8-8.

The score remained that way until the ninth when Sydney Conklin hit a two-run single to score Brandner and Valdes to make it 10-8.

Erica Soliz picked up the win for WOU, going 5.1 innings in relief - giving up no runs on four hits with five strikeouts and no walks.

Chelby Smalley (RBI, R), Katelyn McGough (R), Natalie Willoughby (RBI, R) and Conklin (2 RBI, R) each had a pair of hits for the Wolves.

In the second game, WOU led 2-0 going into the sixth inning before WWU scored a run in the sixth, seventh and eighth inning to get the win.

Valdes led the Wolves, going 2-for-2 with two RBI and two walks. Logan Carlos also had multiple hits, going 2-for-4.

Maddie Mayer picked up the loss, going 7.1 innings and giving up three runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two walks.

The two teams play another doubleheader Monday to close out the series.
