BELLINGHAM, Wash. --- The Western Oregon softball team run-ruled Western Washington 10-0 in game one and fell in game two 3-2 Monday at Viking Field to split the four-game series.

In the first game, WOU (15-16, 7-3) starter
Maddie Mayer shut down the Vikings (14-14, 6-6) – allowing just four hits and striking out five in the six-inning shutout.

The Wolves scored a run in the first on a
Sophie Franklin RBI single, three in the fourth (
Bella Valdes RBI double,
Sydney Conklin RBI single,
Logan Carlos RBI double), two in the fifth (Franklin RBI single,
Baylie Kahele RBI single) and three more in the sixth (
Katelyn McGough RBI single,
Isabelle Lewis RBI single and a run scoring on an error) to force the run rule after six innings.

McGough finished 2-for-3 with a double, three runs and an RBI,
Chelby Smalley went 2-for-4 with a run, Franklin finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run and Conklin went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run.

In game two, the Wolves trailed WWU 2-0 heading into the fifth inning before Smalley hit an RBI single to right to cut the lead in half. In the sixth, WOU tied it on a Makenna Marshall RBI fielder's choice. However, the Vikings hit a homer in the bottom of the sixth and held off the Wolves in the seventh to pick up the win.

Smalley finished 2-for-4 with an RBI while Lewis went 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles.
Erica Soliz started the game and went 3.1 innings and gave up two runs (one earned) on four hits with two strikeouts and a walk.
Chelsea Smith picked up the loss in relief, going 2.2 innings and giving up just one hit (the homer in the sixth) with four strikeouts and two walks.

WOU returns to action Friday at the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, California.
