Wolves go 2-2 over first two days at TOC, play final game Sunday

TURLOCK, Calif. --- The Western Oregon softball team split a pair of games on Friday and Saturday during the Tournament of Champions in Turlock, California.

The Wolves (17-18) on Saturday capped the day with a 3-2 win over Hawaii Hilo. WOU scored three runs in the third inning - highlighted by an Isabelle Lewis two-run single - and Chelsea Smith in the circle held off the Vulcans, going the distance and giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits with three strikeouts and four walks to pick up the win. At the plate, Katelyn McGough went 2-for-3 with a double.

WOU started Saturday with a 1-0 loss to Holy Names - with the only run being scored in the fourth inning. Maddie Mayer was strong in the circle for the Wolves, going all six innings and giving up a run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks. Bella Valdes paced WOU at the plate, going 2-for-2.

On Friday, the Wolves finished the day with an 8-0 win over Academy of Art. Chelby Smalley was 4-for-4 for WOU, driving in three runs, scoring two and adding a stolen base. Valdes was 2-for-4 with a triple, two RBI and a run, McGough went 2-for-3 and Maddie Doig was 2-for-4 with a run. Mayer pitched a two-hit shutout, striking out seven and walking none to pick up the victory.

WOU started the TOC with a 9-1 loss to No. 13 Sonoma State with Lewis getting the only hit and RBI for the Wolves. Smith picked up the loss, going an inning and giving up five runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk.

WOU closes out play at the event 10 a.m. Sunday against Chico State.
