TURLOCK, Calif. --- The Western Oregon softball team scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to rally and beat Chico State 3-2 Sunday at the Tournament of Champions at Pedretti Park.
The Wolves (18-18) and the Wildcats (13-15) went to extra innings tied 1-1 and, with a runner starting the inning on second, Chico State scored a run in the top of the eighth - forcing WOU to have to at least score one to keep the game going.
Katelyn McGough sacrificed pinch runner
Victoria Zimmerman to third to start the inning and
Sophie Franklin drew a walk to put runners on the corners.
Bella Valdes drove in her second run of the game hitting a grounder to shortstop and reaching on a throwing error.
Baylie Kahele then hit a ball to shortstop which was misplayed - and Franklin scored from second to win the game for the Wolves.
Maddie Mayer picked up her thrid win of the tournament, going all eight innings and giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with six strikeouts and two walks. Mayer during the tournament pitched 21 innings and gave up two earned runs on nine hits with 16 strikeouts and four walks - an ERA of 0.67.
Valdes finished with two RBI while going 1-for-2 as four other players each had a hit for WOU.
The Wolves return to GNAC play Friday when they begin a four-game series at home against Central Washington.
