Wolves take both ends of doubleheader from Saint Martin's on Thursday, 5-4 and 3-0

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team used strong pitching and timely hitting to sweep a doubleheader from Saint Martin's, 5-4 and 3-0, Thursday at WOU Baseball Field.

The Wolves (14-8 overall, 8-4 GNAC) in the first game took a 1-0 lead on a Jacob Maiben homer to left in the fourth inning before the Saints (9-18, 6-8) answered with a run in the next half inning to tie it. WOU took the lead in the bottom of the sixth with a run and added four more in the seventh thanks to RBI from Derek Maiben, Curran Mitzel, AJ Cortese and Justyn Herzog to take a 6-1 lead.

SMU stormed back with four runs in the ninth to get within a run before Sebasten Boivin picked up the save - his third on the season thanks to 0.2 innings of work. Dylan Chalmers had another stellar start, going six innings and giving up a run on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks - lowering his ERA to 2.12 on the season.

At the plate, Jacob Maiben finished 3-for-5 with two runs, an RBI and a stolen base. Levi Cummings finished 2-fof-4 with a run and Cortese finished 2-for-4 with a double, run and RBI.

In game two, it was the WOU pitching that shined as Chris Hardin went six innings and allowed no runs and four hits with four strikeouts and one hit batter to pick up his fourth win of the season. Devin Bell came in and got three outs on three pitches to pick up his second save of the season.

WOU got all it would need in the first inning on RBI singles from Derek Maiben and John Oleson. Maiben added his second RBI of the game on an RBI single to left to make the final 3-0.

Derek Maiben finished 3-for-3 with two RBI while Jacob Maiben went 2-for-3 with a run and RBI.

The two teams meet again at 10 a.m. Friday for another doubleheader to conclude the series.
