Wolves split doubleheader with Saints on Friday, take three of four in series

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team split a doubleheader with Saint Martin's on a wet Friday, winning the first game 5-3 and dropping the second 6-4, at WOU Baseball Field.

In the first game, the Wolves (15-9 overall, 9-5 GNAC) scored two in the second on a sacrifice fly from Colin Irwin and an RBI fielder's choice from Jacob Maiben to take an early lead and added two more in the third on a wild pitch and another Irwin sacrifice fly to make it 4-0.

The score remained that way until the eighth inning behind a strong start from Arturo Alvarez - who pitched into the eighth inning. SMU (10-19, 6-9)  scored three in the eighth to cut the lead to one before the Wolves got a run back in the bottom of the inning an a Curran Mitzel RBI single to make it 5-3.

Devin Bell did the rest for WOU, tossing a perfect ninth to pick up his third save of the season (second of the series) - lowering his ERA to 0.93 on the season as the freshman has given up just one run on two hits in 9.2 innings of work.

Alvarez picked up the win, going 7.2 innings and giving up two runs on three hits with seven strikeouts and two walks.

Derek Maiben and Curran MItzel each went 3-for-5 with Mitzel adding an RBI and Maiben a stolen base. John Oleson went 2-for-3 with two runs while Justyn Herzog was 2-for-2 with a run.

In game two, the Saints scored a single run in the first and second inning before adding three more in the sixth and another in the seventh to make it 6-0. The Wolves rallied in the seventh-and-final inning with Irwin being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score a run and Randy Stultz hitting a three-run double down the right field line to make it 6-4 - but that's as close as WOU got.

Bryce Bond took the loss, going five innings and giving up three runs (two earned) on three hits with three strikeouts, five walks and a hit batter. WOU pitching struggled with control in game two - walking 11 and hitting another.

At the plate, Mitzel finished 2-for-3 with a run.

WOU returns to action next Friday at Northwest Nazarene in Nampa, Idaho.
