BILLINGS, Mont. --- The Western Oregon softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader Friday in walk-off fashion to Montana State Billings, 4-3 and 8-7, at Avitus Group Stadium.
The Wolves (21-21, 10-6) in the first game fell behind the Yellowjackets (15-21, 7-7) 3-0 in the first inning with all three runs unearned due to two WOU errors. The Wolves got back eventually tied the game with a
Logan Carlos solo homer in the third and a two-run homer by
Maddie Doig in the sixth before MSUB scored a run in the seventh to pick up the win.
Doig finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and the homer while Carlos was 2-for-4 with the home run.
Maddie Mayer picked up the loss, going the distance and giving up four runs (one earned) on five hits with two strikeouts and five walks.
In game two, WOU took a 4-0 lead in the top of the second thanks to an RBI double by Doig, an RBI groundout by
Bella Valdes and a two-run single by
Kirah McGlothan. The Yellowjackets score three in the third on a three-run homer to cut the lead to one before an
Isabelle Lewis two-run double in the sixth pushed the WOU lead to 6-3.
However, MSUB scored three runs in the sixth - the last on a WOU error - to tie the game. The Wolves looked like it still might pull off the win as Carlos came through with an RBI single to make it 7-6 heading into the bottom of the seventh, but MSUBÂ hit back-to-back homers with one out in the inning to come away with the win.
Lewis finished 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI, Doig went 2-for-4 with two doubles, an RBI and a run, Carlos was 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run,
Baylie Kahele went 2-for-2 and
Victoria Zimmerman went 2-for-2 with a run.
Chelsea Smith got the loss, going 6.1 innings and giving up eight runs (seven earned) on seven hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
The Wolves and Yellowjackets play another doubleheader starting at 11 a.m. (PT) Saturday in Montana.
