LACEY, Wash. ---Â The Western Oregon softball team dropped a pair of games at Saint Martin's, 9-7 and 4-1, Tuesday at Saints Field.
The first game was a continuation of a game started March 13 that was postponed due to rain with WOU (22-24 overall, 11-9 GNAC) trailing 8-3. The Wolves got within three with a pair of runs in the fifth on a
Katelyn McGough sac fly and a
Natalie Willoughby RBI single to make it 8-5. SMU (24-14, 11-7) added a run in the bottom of the fifth to push the lead to four. The Wolves scored a pair of runs on a
Maddie Doig two-run double in the seventh, but that was as close as they would get.
Overall in the game,
Chelsea Smith got the loss - giving up eight runs (none earned due to four WOU errors) on five hits while striking out two.
Maddie Mayer pitched the final 4.1 innings and gave up just one run on one hit.
Willoughby finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and run, Doig was 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI,
Sydney Conklin was 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run and
Chelby Smalley went 2-for-4.
In the second game, WOU fell behind in the first 1-0 before tying hte game on a Doig RBI single in the top of the fourth. But the Saints scored a run in the fourth, fifth and sixth to come away with the win.
Smith got the loss, going all six innings and giving up four runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and five walks. Doig was the only Wolf who had multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
WOU returns to action 1 p.m. Friday when it hosts first-place Northwest Nazarene in its final regular-season series of the year. Friday is WOU's Unity Game while Saturday will be Senior Day (prior to the team's first game at noon).
