WOU celebrates seniors, drops both ends of doubleheader to first-place NNU

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon softball team celebrated its six seniors Saturday, but dropped both ends of a doubleheader to first-place Northwest Nazarene, 1-0 and 3-1, at WOU Softball Field and will now wait and see if it qualifies for the GNAC Championships.

The Wolves now sit at 11-13 in GNAC play and in the fourth-and-final spot in the GNAC Championships - however Montana State Billings is and Central Washington are both 9-13 with two games Sunday (MSUB against Simon Fraser, Central Washington against Saint Martin's) which could impact WOU getting into the conference postseason.

These are the scenarios:
- If both teams lose at least one game - the Wolves are in
- If Central Washington and Western Oregon tie at 11-13 - the Wolves get in due to winning the head-to-head series 3-1
- If Montana State Billings and Western Oregon tie at 11-13 - the Yellowjackets get in due to winning the head-to-head series 3-1
- If there is a three-way tie, it goes to record against each team and MSUB would get in going 6-2 against WOU and CWU (WOU is 4-4 and CWU is 2-6).

As for Saturday's game - the Wolves' Chelsea Smith and the Nighthawks' Sidney Booth were each throwing shutouts into the seventh inning of the first game. NNU scratched a run across on a two-out single with the WOU throw from the outfield just late. The Wolves couldn't answer and dropped the contest.

Smith picked up the loss, going six-plus innings and giving up a run on three hits with four strikeouts and eight walks.

Bella Valdes had two of the Wolves' four hits, going 2-for-3.

In game two, WOU took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning when senior Kirah McGlothan hit a solo home run to left field. The lead didn't last as NNU on an 0-2 count with two outs and the bases loaded hit a three-run triple to take the lead for good.

Maddie Mayer picked up the loss, going all seven innings and giving up three runs on four hits with four strikeouts and three walks. Logan Carlos was the lone WOU player with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
