WOU baseball clinches GNAC title with a pair of walk-off wins over MSU Billings

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon baseball team clinched the regular season GNAC title thanks to a pair of walk-off wins Saturday over Montana State Billings at WOU Baseball Field.

With WOU at 19-8 in conference play, second-place Northwest Nazarene (17-15 with no more games left) and third-place Central Washington (14-14 with four games left) can't catch the Wolves.

In the first game, the Wolves (26-12 overall) trailed 8-2 heading to the bottom of the seventh before scoring a run in the seventh in the seventh on a Justyn Herzog sac fly and three more in the eighth in the on a Curran Mitzel RBI groundout and a Herzog two-run single to cut the lead to 8-6.

In hte ninth, Mitzel hit an RBI single before John Olseon ended the game on a two-run single to make the final 9-8.

Six Wolves finished with multiple hits with Oleson (3-for-6) and AJ Cortese (3-for-3) leading the way. Ryan Witt picked up the win in relief, pitching a scoreless ninth inning to keep the game in reach.

In game two, the Wolves fell behind 4-0 after the top of the first before RBIs from Oleson and Cortese in the first and from Hibiki Ouchi, Derek Maiben and Owen Bischoff in the second made it 5-4 Wolves. 

The seven-inning game was eventually tied at 8-8 heading into the seventh before an eight-pitch at-bat by Herzog led to a game-winning RBI single to give the Wolves the five-game sweep of the Yellowjackets.

Jacob Maiben led the Wolves at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double while Bischoff, Oleson, Cortese and Herzog had two hits apiece with Cortese and Herzog adding two RBI apiece.

Ryan Shipley got the win in relief, going one scoreless inning in the ninth, giving up one hit and striking out two.

The Wolves wrap up regular season play at Saint Martin's next Friday and Saturday with a four-game series.
