WOU baseball drops both ends of doubleheader at Northwest Nazarene

NAMPA, Idaho --- The Western Oregon baseball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Northwest Nazarene on Saturday, 6-5 and 9-1, at Elmore W. Vail Field.

In game one, the Wolves (16-12, 10-8) scored two in the top of the first on an AJ Cortese two-run single, but the Nighthawks (18-20, 12-8) answered with four in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-2.

WOU trailed 6-2 heading to the seventh before a Collin Irwin RBI single and a two-run single by Cortese made it 6-5 – but that's as close as the Wolves would get.

Cortese finished 3-for-4 with four RBI, Jacob Maiben went 2-for-5 with two runs and Derek Maiben went 2-for-5 with a run. Arturo Alvarez picked up the loss, going five innings and giving up six runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and a walk.

In game two, the Wolves again took the lead first on an RBI single from Chris Gatter in the second inning before NNU again answered in the bottom of the inning – scoring five runs to take a 5-1 lead. NNU scored four more in the fourth on a grand slam.

WOU had just four hits in game two with Derek Maiben going 2-for-3. Bryce Bond got the loss, going two innings and giving up five runs on five hits with a strikeout and a walk.

The Wolves return to action Tuesday at Bushnell in Eugene.
