Wolves fall in 2023 opener to defending FCS national champ, top-ranked South Dakota State

BROOKINGS, S.D. --- The Western Oregon football team dropped its season opener to defending FCS national champion and top-ranked South Dakota State 45-7 on Thursday at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium.

The Jackrabbits scored 21 points in the first, 21 points in the second and three in the third to jump out to a 45-0 lead before freshman quarterback Jordan McCarty scored on a 9-yard run with 3:47 left in the contest to make the final 45-7.

WOU was outgained 403-209 in total yardage and turned the ball over three times in the contest.

Gannon Winker finished 12-for-23 passing for 67 yards while McCarty was 2-for-2 for 40 yards and rushed for another 37 yards and a score to lead the team in rushing. The Wolves rushed for 102 yards in teh contest.

Daron Ulrich Jr. led the team defensively with 11 tackles - including eight solo. Luis Vicino had six tackles with 1.5 for a loss and a pass breakup.
