WAIPAHU, Hawaii --- The Western Oregon got a goal in the final minutes to take down Hawaii Hilo 2-1 on Thursday in the Wolves' season opener at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Complex.
WOU (1-0) had held a 1-0 lead going into the half after
Jacob Garcia converted a penalty kick in the 41st minute. However, the Vulcans (0-1) scored 14 minutes into the second half to even the contest up.
The score remained that way until 89th minute as
Marco Millan hit
Alejandro Velasco wide and the junior dribbled right, found a window to shoot through and converted to give the Wolves the lead and the win.
The win gives head coach
Michael Behonick his first victory as a Wolf.
WOU was outshot in the contest 20-9, but it was much closer on shots on goal (10-7) with only two Wolves shots off target. Garcia had a team-high four shots (two on goal) while Millan had two (both on goal).
Wolves keeper
Juan Suarez made eight saves in the contest in facing those 20 shots.
