MONMOUTH, Ore. --- After rallying from 14-0 down to take a 29-17 lead at the half Saturday afternoon, the Western Oregon football team saw it's lead vanish with 68 seconds left as it fell to Eastern New Mexico 30-29 at Greyhound Stadium in its Lone Star Conference opener.
WOU (1-2, 0-1) racked up 330 yards (308 on the ground) in the first half as it rallied from a 14-0 first-quarter deficit by scoring four touchdowns - an
Austin Bacher 56-yard run, a Bacher 1-yard run, a
Dominique Loggins 79-yard run and a Bacher 64-yard run - in a 15-minute span to take a 29-17 lead at the half (ENMU - now 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in LSC play - kicked a field goal midway through the second quarter).
The Wolves couldn't find that offensive rhythm in the second half as it punted four times and turned it over on downs twice in its six second-half possessions. Meanwhile the Greyhounds put together a touchdown drive midway through the third to make it 29-24 WOU before getting the ball with 1:45 remaining in the fourth on its own 16 and using six plays to drive 84 yards in 37 seconds capped with a 34-yard touchdown pass with 1:08 left to take a 30-29 lead.
WOU couldn't put a drive together as it turned it over on downs on its own end of the field and dropped to 1-2 on the season.
The Wolves outgained ENMU 452-384 in the contest, but were outgained 171-122 in the second half. WOU racked up 373 yards on the ground with Loggins leading the way with 208 yards and a score on 19 carries - the 10th-most yards in a game in WOU history. Bacher rushed for 167 yards and three scores for the Wolves.
Gannon Winker went 11-for-24 passing for 79 yards and an interception.
Keyvaun Eady had a team-high six catches for 55 yards.
Malcolm Liufau and J.J. Tofaeono had a team-high seven tackles apiece while
Joseph Northcutt had the Wolves' lone sack.
WOU returns to action 1:05 p.m. Saturday at home against Central Washington.
