MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's soccer team used a goal in each half and posted its first shutout of the season in a 2-0 victory over Colorado Christian in the Wolves' home opener and final game before starting conference play.
WOU (3-2) got on the board in the 25th minute when
Gabriel Silva took advantage of a poor pass in the back half by the Cougars (1-1-3) as he stepped in front of the ball intended for the keeper with one touch then poked it in with his left foot to make it 1-0 Wolves - his second goal on the season.
The score remained that way until the 77th minute when
Yahir Ocampo on the right side passed it forward to
Edson Jimenez who crossed it across the front of the goal to the other side where
Alejandro Velasco was there to put in in the right side of the net to make it 2-0. It was Velasco's team-high third goal of the campaign.
WOU held on from there as
Juan Suarez picked up the shutout, making five saves in the contest. The Wolves outshot the Cougars 15-11 (including 8-5 on shots on goal).
WOU with the win has surpassed last season win total (2-13-2).
The Wolves don't return to action again until Sept. 28 at home against Simon Fraser in their GNAC opener.
