WOU women's soccer trumps SFU with Nowatzke's second-half strike

MONMOUTH, Ore. – Lilly Nowatzke's second-half goal propelled the Western Oregon women's soccer team to victory over the Simon Fraser Red Leafs on Thursday afternoon at WOU Turf Field.

The Wolves (5-1-1, 2-1-0) took the lead against SFU with a goal in the 61st minute when Emma Higashi led Raeanne Jones into the goalkeeper's box. There, Jones executed a one-touch pass around the keeper, finding Nowatzke, who scored into the open net to make it 1-0.

The Wolves' attack applied pressure on SFU throughout the game, finishing with 13 shots, five being on target. WOU's defense proved to be strong, holding the Red Leafs (2-2-1, 1-2-0) to just five shots, with only two on target, both of which Sophia Pierce saved. With this win, Pierce tallied her fourth shutout of the season.

The Wolves return to action 2 p.m. Saturday when they host Western Washington at WOU Turf Field.
