Jones goal, defense lead Wolves past defending national champs Western Washington

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon women's soccer team scored a goal in the first half and held defending national champion Western Washington scoreless in a 1-0 victory at the WOU Turf Field on Saturday afternoon.

WOU (6-1-1, 3-1) found the back of the net in the 24th minute when Elizabeth Parker passed to Chloe Smith, who received it near the goal box, then found Raeanne Jones, who turned it into a one-touch goal in the bottom right corner. Jones has scored a goal in three of the last four games for the Wolves.

The match was closely contested throughout. Goalkeeper Sophia Pierce preserved a shutout despite the Vikings (3-3-3, 1-1-2) tallying eight shots in the second half. Pierce made two saves in the match. The Wolves outshot the Vikings 13-11, with the Wolves having four shots on target compared to WWU's two.

WOU returns to the pitch Thursday as it travels to play Montana State University Billings with a 5 p.m. (PT) kickoff.
