ANCHORAGE, Alaska --- A Jasong Gallant fading 3-pointer with 1.2 seconds left gave the Western Oregon men's basketball team a 55-53 victory over Alaska Anchorage on Thursday night at Alaska Airlines Center.
The Wolves (5-11 overall, 2-6 GNAC) trailed the Seawolves (14-5, 4-4) 52-50 with 1:07 remaining after a 3-pointer by UAA. On the Wolves' next possession, Gallant - who scored the final seven points for WOU - drained two free throws with 36 seconds remaining to tie the contest.
After a UAA miss and foul, the Wolves had the ball with seven seconds left when Gallant took the inbound, went to his right and shot a 3-pointer near the sideline fading to his left toward the baseline as he released it. The ball hit nothing but net with 1.2 seconds left to give WOU a 55-52 lead. WOU, however, was called for a team technical for leaving the bench after the basket and UAA split those free throws to make it a two-point game.
But the Wolves'
Kris Cook picked up a steal on the inbound and WOU hung on for the win.
The Wolves, who led for more than 30 minutes of the contest, were led by
Kris Cook's 18 points as he went 5-for-8 from 3-point range and added two blocks and two steals. Gallant finished with 17 points, six assist and three rebounds while
Cameron Benzel finished with a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
WOU returns to action Saturday at Alaska in Fairbanks.
