FAIRBANKS, Alaska --- The Western Oregon men's basketball team got a career-high 31 points from
Kris Cook and made a late run at Alaska, but the Wolves fell short 72-65 Saturday night at Alaska Airlines Gynmasium.
WOU (5-12 overall, 2-7 GNAC) trailed the Nanooks (4-13, 2-7) for much of the contest, but made a run late in the second half as 3-pointers from
Trey Wilmot and Cook cut a 70-59 deficit to five points with 32 seconds remaining. After getting a defensive stop,
Makaio Morphy scored with nine seconds left to make it a one-possession game at 70-67.
The Wolves were forced to foul, however, and the Nanooks drained both free throws to make it a five point game with eight seconds left. Cook then missed just his third 3-pointer in 10 attempts in the contest and the clock went down to zero as the Wolves fell on the road.
Cook went 7-for-10 from 3-point range and 12-for-21 overall from the field for 31 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and a steal.
Cameron Benzel secured a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds while
Jason Gallant had nine points and a team-high six assists.
The Wolves return home this week as they host Simon Fraser 7 p.m. Thursday and Western Washington 2 p.m. Saturday.
