Wolves fall in OT to Simon Fraser, 88-87

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's basketball team fell just short in a back-and-forth contest 88-87 in overtime to Simon Fraser on Thursday night at New PE Building.

The Wolves (5-13 overall, 2-8 GNAC) led Simon Fraser (4-17, 2-8) 44-37 at the break behind a 20-point half from Kris Cook and held a 73-63 lead after a Cameron Benzel dunk with 5:16 left in the contest.

But the Red Leafs went on a 13-3 run - capped by a Eric Beckett 3-pointer with two seconds left - to force overtime.

WOU started the extra time strong as a Benzel bucket and a Carson Frincke 3-pointer gave WOU a five-point lead in the first minute of overtime. The Wolves led the entire overtime until Elliot Dimaculangan hit two free throws with five seconds left to give the Red Leafs an 88-87 lead and the win as a half-court 3-point shot at the buzzer was just off the mark.

The Wolves shot it well from behind the arc, going 14-for-29 (48.3 percent), but were outshot at the free throw line 24-3 in the contest - including not shooting a free throw for the final 31 minutes, 46 seconds of the contest.

Cook paced the Wolves with 25 points, going 5-for-10 from 3-point range and adding six rebounds and three assists while playing all 45 minutes. Benzel had his third-straight double-double with 24 points and 14 rebounds to go along with four assists, three blocks and two steals. Jason Gallant had 19 points, eight rebounds and eight assists.

WOU returns to action 2 p.m. Saturday to take on Western Washington in Monmouth.
