LACEY, Wash. --- The 15th-ranked Western Oregon men's soccer team took care of business against last-place Saint Martin's, jumping out to a 5-0 lead before cruising to a 6-2 win Thursday afternoon at Saints Field.
The six goals for the Wolves (9-1-1 overall, 5-0 GNAC) sets a school record - breaking the old record of four done three times (including this past Saturday against Seattle Pacific) in the three-year history of the program.Â
The victory also moves WOU's unbeaten streak to 10 (9-0-1) - outscoring opponents 28-8 - and their winning streak to six - outscoring opponents 20-5.
On Thursday against the winless Saints (0-11, 0-5), WOU took a 3-0 lead at the half behind a goal from
Marcus Vazquez (assistsed by
Jacob Garcia) in the 16th minute,
Michael Divano's fifth goal on the season in the 32nd minute (assisted by
Diego Andrade) and an
Alejandro Velasco goal in the 37th minute (assisted by Vazquez).
WOU opened the second half with an
Aidan Azavedo goal in the 49th minute (assisted by
Alex Grignon and
Evan Huber) followed by Velasco's second goal of the game (assisted again by Grignon and Huber) to make it 5-0. SMU scored twice over the next 10 minutes before a
Nathan Martinez Sanchez goal in the 89th minute made the final.
The Wolves outshot the Saints 19-5 in the contest, including 10-3 on shots on goal.
WOU returns to action next Thursday when they host Northwest Nazarene at noon.
