No. 10 Wolves move unbeaten streak to 11 with 4-1 win over second-place NNU

MONMOUTH, Ore. --- Giving the 10th-ranked team in the country an extra person proved fatal for Northwest Nazarene as Western Oregon put its foot on the gas in the second half with three goals for a 4-1 win over the Nighthawks on Thursday afternoon at WOU Turf Field in a matchup of the first and second place teams in the conference.

The Wolves (10-1-1 overall, 6-0 GNAC, 18 points) move their unbeaten streak (10-0-1) and their home unbeaten streak (9-0-2) to 11 games while winning its seventh-straight match.

WOU pounced on NNU (4-6-2, 3-2-1, 10 points) in the sixth minute on a Diego Andrade goal assisted by Jacob Garcia. The score remained that way until the second half when NNU's Jonathan Cardona took a shot from out wide that hit a WOU player, took an odd angle and somehow found its way into the back of the net in the 59th minute to tie the score.

The Nighthawks had the momentum through the first 14 minutes of the first half, but suddenly were a player down after an NNU player was given a red card in the 60th minute.

WOU took full advantage as three minutes later Abraham Villalbos scored his fifth goal of the season - assisted by Michael Divano - to give the Wolves the lead for good. Marcus Vazquez added a goal in the 69th minute to make it 3-1 before Alex Grignon headed a ball in on a beautiful cross from Nathan Jimenez in the 87th minute to make the final 4-1.

WOU outshot NNU 14-5 in the contest, including 11-4 on shots on goal. Wolves keeper Andre Schlaefli finished with four saves.

The Wolves next have a home game at Willamette University's Sparks Field in Salem 10 a.m. Saturday against Montana State Billings.
