ELLENSBURG, Wash. --- The Western Oregon men's basketball team got 30 points from
Jason Gallant and withstood a late charge to beat CSU Monterey Bay 89-88 Friday evening at Nicholson Arena in the opening game of the GNAC/CCAA Crossover.
The Wolves (1-3 overall) led by as much has 16 points in the second half and were up up 82-71 with 4:04 remaining after a Gallant bucket. WOU led 88-83 wth 16 seconds left before a 3-pointer from the Otters with eight seconds left cut the lead to 88-86. CSUMB was forced to foul and the Wolves split a pair of free throws with six seconds left to increase the lead to three.
The Otters had a chance to tie it as they were fouled on a 3-point attempt with a second left, but missed the game-tying free throw after hitting the first two as the Wolves hung on for the victory.
The Wolves were hot from behind the arc, going 13-for-26 from 3-point range - including draining nine first-half 3-pointer to lead 45-41 at the half.
To go along with 30 points, Gallant had four assists and two steals.
O'shen Cazimero had 13 points, three assists and three steals in 20 minutes of play,
Zach Moore was a perfect 4-for-4 from 3-point range for 12 points to go along with seven rebounds,
Makaio Morphy had 12 points - hitting four 3-pointers - and
Mario Williams Jr. had 10 points and three rebounds.
The Wolves take the court again 11 a.m. Sunday as they take on No. 14 Cal State San Bernardino to wrap up play at the GNAC/CCAA Crossover.
