MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon men's soccer team in just its third year of existence clinched the program's first GNAC title and punched its ticket to the NCAA West Region Championships after defeating Seattle Pacific 3-1 Saturday in front of an energetic crowd and getting a little help in Montana.
The Wolves (13-2-1, 9-1)Â with the win moved to 27 points in the standings while a loss by second-place Western Washington at Montana State Billings kept the Vikings at 22 points - and with only one match left for WWU - secured the title for WOU (which has two matches left on the schedule).
As for Saturday's win, the Wolves fell behind Seattle Pacific (6-6-4, 3-4-3) 1-0 in the 18th minute on a penalty kick before bouncing back just before halftime behind a goal apiece from a pair of players that've been with the program since day one in 2022.
Alex Grignon scored his fourth goal of the season in the 38th minute on an assist from
Ethan Fisher to tie the match before less than four minutes later
Abraham Villalobos scored his sixth goal of the season on an assist from
Yahir Ocampo Navarro to give the Wolves a 2-1 advantage going into the half.
Michael Divano added a goal in the 52nd minute for his sixth goal of the year to make th final 3-1.
WOU returns to action Thursday at Western Washington before wrapping up the regular season at Northwest Nazarene on Saturday.
