MONMOUTH, Ore. --- The Western Oregon softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader to defending NAIA national champion Southern Oregon, 5-2 and 7-5, on Saturday afternoon in the Wolves' first home games of the season at WOU Field.
The Wolves (2-4) took a 2-0 lead on the Raiders (3-2) in game one thanks to an RBI single from
Isabelle Lewis in the third inning to score
Bella Valdes and it was Zimmerman driving a run in the fourth on an RBI single to score
Aaliyah Gaboriault.
SOU rallied with a run in the fifth and another in the sixth to tie the game heading into the seventh. In the final frame, the Raiders scored three - two unearned due to a pair of errors in the inning by the Wolves - to take a 5-2 lead it wouldn't relinquish.
Zimmerman finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base, Lewis was 3-for-4 with an RBI and
Bella Valdes finished 2-for-4 with a run.
Mackenzee Collins picked up the loss, going the distance and giving up five runs - three earned - on six hits with eight strikeouts and five walks.
In game two, the Raiders jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first and tacked on another in the fourth to make it 5-0 heading to the bottom of inning. A pair of hits and a SOU error loaded the bases for
Natalie Willoughby who blasted a 1-0 pitch over the center field wall for a grand slam to quickly cut the lead to 5-4.
But WOU couldn't get any closer as SOU tacked on a pair of runs in the seventh to pull away.
Willoughby finished 2-for-3 with a homer, four RBI and a run, Zimmerman again had a three-hit game - going 3-for-4 with an RBI while
Carly Turpen was 2-for-3.
